Week 7, Derrek Ballard

Once again, I didn't do as well on the homework "quiz" this week as I was hoping.  This class really makes you think!  The assignment was full of things I felt like I should have known but clearly didn't.  The most interesting rule I learned from The Associated Press Stylebook this week was specifically about ages and height.

If expressing ages or height as adjectives before a noun, use hyphens.  For example, "The 12-year-old girl."  If the age or height comes after the noun, do not use hyphens.  For example, "The boy is six feet five inches tall."

To exemplify this both ways: "This is a picture of a six-foot-five-inch boy standing next to a girl that is four feet six inches tall."

The editing mistake I found this week is from my Facebook feed.  It's a small mistake, but sometimes the smallest ones are the hardest to catch.  The mistake is found in the second half of the statement and there are two ways to fix it: by changing the period to a semi-colon or by changing the word "that" to the word "which" and the period to a comma.  I personally like the first change.  I'm also not sure if "free thinking" should be hyphenated?  My research shows both methods as acceptable.

  • I will respect you regardless of who you support in this election.  I don't unfriend people due to political views; that degrades democracy and free thinking.

  1. Great catch on that meme you found! I agree that it's almost harder to find the small errors, as they often go unnoticed. I also tend to find many of these errors when browsing social media and it is always funny to me to see who posts them. Thanks for sharing this!
