The homework
this week was very difficult. I did fine on the AP Quiz because I was able to
look up rules and use the hints provided. However, I thought the AP Story was
very challenging. I found it hard to identify all of the grammar and punctuation
mistakes in the story without any hints. Although the homework was difficult it
felt good when I was able to locate an error easily.
There is so much
information to learn from the Associated Press Stylebook. One thing that I learned and found
interesting was the AP rule about writing “girl and Boy.”
The
AP Stylebook rule says to “use girl until the 18th birthday, and
then use woman.” This rule is the same for a boy or a man. The rule also says
to “use youth until the 18th birthday and then use adult.”
My
grammar mistake this week was found while I was at work. I often manage “online
chat requests” from customers that are browsing our website. Listed below is a
portion of the chat message I received:
I am based in the UK. Do you
a UK dealer or do I order direct? Do you have a sketch of the arrangement?
This should read:
I am based in the UK. Are you a dealer for the United Kingdom or
should I order direct? Do you have a sketch of the arrangement?
It's amazing to see the ways you thought were correct for grammar, turning out to actually be incorrect, isn't it? I have the same thinking process, there is SO much to learn from the AP book. I actually take it to work at times to help with emails and the correct way to use words.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering on the girl/woman idea when is it appropriate to use lady? Is it all ages or certain ages?
