Week 6 - Carly Rowe

Going through this week’s assignment of Right Words, I was amazed to see a lot of words that are commonly confusing (affect/effect, principal/principle), but I was mostly intrigued by the words I had no idea existed nor were a thing, such as gibe, jibe, flout, and hordes. I have taken this week’s assignment and applied it to real life and I didn’t even realize how many times a day I see words used in the wrong context. I see the mistakes often in work emails, which (unfortunately) should not happen at a State Government building.

One of the things I learned in grade school, and has stuck with me, is the difference between principal, and principle. PrinciPAL, is easy to remember because the principal should be a “PAL.”

A common mistake that I see often, is the difference between effect and affect. Honestly, I still get them mixed up at times. I have learned this week the differences and they have seemed to stick with me better.

One of the last items on the assignment that through me for a loop was “fliers” and “flyers.” I have ALWAYS thought that “flyers” was the correct term for such items like “The dance team is handing out flyers…” NOPE, it is definitely “The dance team is handing out fliers.” Also, the last thing was compliment and complement. This meme below has definitely helped me with the differences between the two words, I was always under the impression that both ways were spelled compliment.

I hope some of these have been helpful to others as they are to me.

  1. The pictures are very helpful, sometimes all you need is a visual representation to help you remember.
