blog #9

The first example I came across was the use of heterosexism language.  I realized that in our office we always ask the name of your “wife” or “husband.” We have found that tends to get us in trouble when we either mistaken the sex of the person we are talking to or their sexual preference.  We have been implementing the word “spouse” in obtaining the name of their martial partner.  An example of Racism was the use of different words in Hip-Hop music.  The problem I find is that it seems to be ok when used in that context but not in others.  This sets unclear boundaries for outsiders trying to define what is acceptable and not in certain cultures.  The next was on Grey’s Anatomy they used examples of ageism.  They were talking about how they refer to the chief as “wiser” or “in his time” and he voice how he was a product of ageism. Dr. Webber stated that his stature of a doctor should be determined by his capabilities not by how long he has been there.  He voiced that his age shouldn’t play a role. The last example I actually saw on a calendar where there were quotes on it.  It was an example of sexism where the writer used the pronoun he to refer to all humanity.  I will post the picture below.
