Blog 7 Jake Holt

When it comes to AP Style, there are a few things that tripped me up for a while until this class came into the picture. The proper use of semicolons was one of those things. I now know that semicolons separate multiple items in a list that began with colon.

They're also used to separate two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. AP Style has also taught me the intricacies of using quotes within quotes, as well as how punctuation rules change when quotation marks are involved.

The last thing I'll mention about AP Style in this post is how it helps distinguish those words which sound exactly alike. The English language is convoluted in that it has a plethora of words that are either spelled the same or sound the same but have different meanings.

AP Style takes it upon themselves to provide clarification in these instances.
