Week 6

I am happy to report that I survived week 6 of Communication Editing. I thought that Test #1 was difficult, but I was also surprised how much I have learned from this class. I realized while taking this test that I need to review the “attribution” section of this course.  This week we were also assigned the “Right Words” exercise. I found this assignment very helpful. It was amazing to realize how many words I often get confused or use incorrectly.  Listed below are some tricks I’ve learned over the years that have helped me:

Whether/Weather: I remember the difference by thinking “Heather checked the weather to determine what to wear.” Because Heather is spelled the same as “weather” apart from one letter it helps me remember in which context to use “WEATHER”.

I often get confused on the correct use of “further” and “farther”. Farther has the word “far” in it and relates to physical distance. “Further” on the other hand is used for metaphorical or figurative distance.

The grammar mistake I found this week were found while I was at work. I recently started writing a newsletter for my company. As part of this newsletter I highlight individuals I work with. I found some grammar mistakes on the questionnaires I had sent back to me.

What is your favorite box of cereal?
Response: not like cereal, but if i have to choose one it would be reeses puffs.

This should read “I do not like cereal, but if I had to choose one it would be Reese Puffs.

  1. That's a good way to remember the difference between whether and weather. That will probably stick with me now!
