Blog #6

As I was going through the Right Words reading, I was surprised at how many words I didn’t even know existed.  I would have to look of the other word to find what it meant.  For example: loath, flout, hordes, and gibe.  I have never heard of these words and had no idea what they meant.  I feel like I don’t really need to know what they mean since I have made it 38 years without knowing and haven’t ever had to use them.  This might be sad but I feel like they are worthless in my life.  I am not going to put much effort into remembering their meaning.  However, I find comfort in knowing their closely related opposite I have been using I fully understand.  I use loathe, flaunt, hoards, and jibe with great ease.  I would be curious to know who did know these words before this class?

The punctuation mistake I found this week is “alot” instead of “a lot.”  In our office we shorthand notes in accounts.  We are infamous for using “alot” because it takes up less space and it’s faster when we are trying to transcribe while listening.  When I go to write “a lot” out of work I find myself not putting the space in it. I always tell myself that it looks prettier with the space so it has to be right.

  1. I agree! When I was doing the quiz on I didn't know some of the words either.
