Blog 9 Jake Holt

In today's society, we have an increasing number of phrases and slurs that are considered not only offensive but politically incorrect and powerful enough to bring dramatic situations such as termination of employment.

In my law class this semester, we're heavily discussing First Amendment rights and what free speech really means. Sure, the First Amendment doesn't legally prohibit us from using swear words and racist slurs, but that's not to say doing so does not come with a set of consequences.

We're judged heavily by the words we choose. Movies cannot be viewed legally by children if containing excessive amounts of profanity. Political candidates can witness an entire campaign crumble to the earth if they so much as let an inappropriate word slip.

To say that these ugly and cruel words have no place in society would be untrue because they are used by society -- and often. Figuring out ways to enforce the regulation of this language is the challenge we face.

  1. Hey Jake. Thank you for your thoughts. Your post reminded me of a quote I heard in my Family Communication Class "Words create heavens or hells." I think that this quote is true. The words we speak/ write can literally create happiness and encouragement for ourselves and others or sadness and discouragement.
