Blog 6 – Choosing the right words

Hello everyone,

I never realized that choosing the right word seems easy enough until you really start to consider the impact your words can have.  Selecting the right word is so crucial to providing the proper meaning to an article, letter, or paper you may be writing.  I have always struggled with using lay or lie appropriately in a given context. To make the right choice, I simply try to remember that the use of the word lay requires an object.  You can lay the papers on the table, or you can lie on the beach. Also, sometimes just taking a moment to think about it and consider the context really helps.    I also never realized that there was actually a grammar rule involving the use of off with the word of.  It’s amazing how often we use words without realizing there are rules to support our communication.

This week I found an error that I thought would fit in well because this module discussed using the words lose and loose appropriately.  Apparently, in Nottingham both the city council and police force are a bit confused on that point, too.

  1. Christie, thank you for your thoughts. Wow I like the error that you found. It goes to show how complex the English Language really is- even those individuals in high position make grammatical errors.
