This class continues to be a challenge for me. I’m
embarrassed to admit that I do not remember learning a lot of the material we
are covering in class. One of the concepts that I struggled with this week was “who”
vs. “whom”. According to our book “who” is always the subject in a sentence and
“whom” is the object. Although this
definition makes sense to me, I struggle breaking down a sentence and
identifying the object and subject.
One website that I have found especially useful is called
Grammar Girl. I was first introduced to this website in my Media Writing course
last fall. I like that this website because it takes some of the rules and
concepts we are learning and simplifies them. Grammar girl helped me better understand some of
the concepts we learned this week. This website especially helped me understand
how to identify the “subject” and “object” in a sentence.
Grammar girl suggests remembering the sentence “I love you”
when determining the difference between a subject and an object. Grammar Girl says the following:
“Subjects do something or are something. In this case, the
subject is “I” and is doing some loving.”
"Objects receive the action or have something done to them.
In our sentence, “you” is being loved. It’s the target of the love.”
Grammar girl has been a good additional resource for me as I
work to improve my writing skills. If you are looking for some additional assistance,
I’d suggest checking it out. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-girl
The grammatical error I found this week was a post I saw on
Facebook. This photo is punctuated poorly and is missing a question mark.
The second error I found was also on Facebook. The post I saw read as follows:
"I think
Deb reserved the date in July maybe the 16 I will find out for sure."
There are several mistakes in this post
including punctuation and word selection. I have revised the sentence below.
“I think Deb reserved a date in July, maybe the
16th? I will find out for sure.”
I feel the exact same way. I have never felt so dumb in a class before. Every time I google "grammar rules for..." I end up at grammar girl.
ReplyDeleteI liked the picture you posted with this weeks blog. I also refer to grammar girl all the time and it has saved me in this class.
