The 11th secret I would add would be:
Read Your Writing Out Loud. For everything important that I write, I try to read it out loud before submitting it or turning it in. That way, if something is written funky, I tend to stumble over it while reading aloud and have to figure out what I need to change.
Here are my three found grammar mistakes:
I found this on Twitter. Jaclyn Hill is a makeup artist with many followers, so I understand that accidents can happen when you’re typing hundreds of responses. However, the sentence should read. “It takes a lot more than that to make me mad.”
A friend shared this meme on Facebook. I think that it needs a comma, so it would read, “If you don’t study, you shall not pass.”
The last one I didn’t get a photo of, but I was at a festival in Salt Lake City last weekend, and there were lots of food booths. One of the booths had a handwritten menu with the food they offered and their prices. All the prices were written as times (5:00) rather than the dollar amount ($5.00).
That last error is done soooooo often! It drives me crazy! Similarly, people use the period or the semicolon to designate time (5.00 or 5;00). Also commonly forgotten is the $ goes BEFORE the amount, not after - $5, not 5$.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughts Amy! This week has been very challenging for me as well, so you are not alone. I like your tip to read your writing out loud. I will definitely be using your tip in the future.
