Punctuation.

One of the biggest things I learned about punctuation was putting a quote inside a quote. I never knew that you were supposed to use double quotations for the first quote, and inside the quote use single quotations. That really shocked me when it came up on the quiz that I got it wrong, it really made me re-think just how smart I am. One of the other major things I struggle with punctuation is hyphens. I never know when to put them or how many to put or anything. Last semester I took a Media Writing class and in that class I learned that I was very bad at punctuation. I had to take a grammar test and failed several times even though I had heard that it was supposed to be very easy. This week after learning about punctuation I noticed a lot of different things in my workplace that were not punctuated correctly. I was paying attention a lot more. I work at a law firm and one of the biggest things I noticed was on a deed I had to re-type. I noticed many different periods and commas in the wrong places and I asked my boss why it was so poorly written. My boss explained to me that it was written many years ago and back then punctuation was not a very big issue. I was frustrated because I had to re-type it to it's exact way it was already written so I could not fix any of the errors. One of the biggest mistakes I kept noticing was they would insert a semi-colon everywhere even if it didn't make any sense. It made me feel smart, but then again I did the punctuation test and realized i'm not so smart. I think there are so many different rules and things with punctuation that it is almost like you have to just memorize them instead of remember certain rules.

  1. I really struggle with the hyphens too! Like seven-year-old makes sense but I start getting very confused when terms like blue-green (bluegreen, blue green, or blue-green?) or like-minded (like minded? ) come up.

Does having wrong punctuation affect the legality of a document?

  2. I agree that punctuation is hard. This whole class is a lot harder than I expected! I think curriculum like this comes easy to some people (my wife would pass this class with flying colors because grammar is "common sense" to her) but I'm having a hard time understanding all of the rules. Some of the questions on the quizzes are really easy and others really have me thinking hard!
