The 11th secret that I would like to add is:
Learn from your criticism. I have a hard time accepting criticism about my
writing and I struggle with this concept every single day. When I began to work
for The Signpost that was the main goal of joining the newspaper staff.
I’ve been writing for
a long time but the only eyes who would ever see my writing would be me. Once I
joined the staff the criticism started almost immediately. It was hard for me
to hear and understand sometimes.
I knew my writing
needed work but my editor taught me things I hadn’t heard before. I know that
once I got over my hurt feelings I was able to see some of the errors I made. I
was able to learn new grammar rules and apply them. My experience with handling
criticism has made me a better writer but, I can honestly say, I still have a
hard time with criticism.
Although I still struggle hearing it that doesn’t stop me
from seeking it out. I want to learn as much as I can about the mistakes I
make. I like to hear from a fresh set of eyes even if I don’t always agree with
them.
One of
the mistakes that I've come across is when the word "do" is used
instead of "due". I see this grammar mistake, I feel, more often than
I should. For example, "Do to unforeseen circumstances we're closed
today."
I like your rule a lot. I have a hard time too, and feel like it is something everyone can work on. Especially if we as writers want to write the best we can, we need to take criticism.
