Punctuation Post

Hey Everyone,

I thought I had a good idea about punctuation so I took the punctuation quiz before reading any of the required material. I wanted to see what I knew beforehand. Afterwards I went through and saw the answers that I got wrong and thought I would share my mistakes with you all. If I get any of these wrong, definitely let me know in the comments below.
One that surprised me was how the comma should be used to specify how someone belongs to another person. Here is an example of what I mean: His daughter, Beth, went to school. The sentence would be okay without the word Beth in there, but if it is present then we need to put commas in to specify he only has one daughter named Beth.
The second one that I got wrong and wanted to share was listing items in a series using commas. An example for this would be: The room is cold, dark and wet. What I had been taught when I was little was that anything with three or more items needed to be separated by a comma. Although this is true in some writing, it is not the case in journalistic writing, and the last item in the series can be joined with the conjunction.
The error I found would be a spelling error at the end of an article that I was reading yesterday about babies getting hiccups in the womb. Our baby happens to be hiccuping about once a day so we turned to our first doctor, Google, to find out if we should be concerned. Anyway, the error is at the end of the article where they wrote, “in now way affects your child youre your health.” I understand what she was trying to say, but tripped up because those are definitely not the correct words. The sentence should have read, “in no way affects your child or your health.” Again if I am totally off-base call me out in the comments below. Hope everyone is having a great week and I can’t wait to read everyone else’s posts.

  1. Hey, looks like we had the same idea when it came to the comma lesson! Also, I thought your grammatical error was a good catch, and I agree with your correction.

  2. I did the exact same thing and I’m so glad that I checked the book because I messed up on some basic stuff. There was many different things with commas that I totally forgot.
