Introduction: Keela Disterhaft

My name is Keela Disterhaft. I’m a Communications major with an emphasis in Digital Media. This is my senior year but I have yet to discover what I want to do when “I grow up”. I feel like I want to learn so many different things within the Communication field that it is so hard to commit to just one thing.

My family originally moved here in 2001. My dad was in the Army and Hill Air Force Base became our last duty station. We lived in Clinton and I went to Northridge High School. My family is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio but I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. I went into the military shortly after graduating from high school and I met my husband there. We both worked at the hospital clinic on base in New Mexico. We’ve been married for nine years and have three kids.

Writing has been a hobby of mine since I was old enough to write. I spent a lot of time as a kid creating my own books and handing them out to my family. I have stacks and stacks of spiral notebooks, from when I was a kid, at my parents’ house full of stories.

I started writing for The Signpost in the summer of 2014 because I needed practice writing for someone other than myself. I was an Arts and Entertainment reporter that first semester. I returned to newspaper staff in the fall of 2015 as a news reporter and quickly became the Assistant News Editor.

I finished up my last semester at The Signpost in spring of 2016. At that same time I became the president of Weber State’s first National Association of Black Journalist group. We worked hard over the summer to get this group started at Weber State and I’m excited to see where things will go for our group!

So, as my final year at Weber State kicks off I have a lot on my plate already! I am currently doing an internship with the Women’s Center as their videographer/photographer. There are a lot of projects I hope to complete during my time with them. My kids have also started another year of school. My middle child is starting his first year in Kindergarten and he couldn’t be more excited!

When I’m not busy with school, or helping my kids with some sort of art project, I’m usually glued to the television. It’s a bad habit, I know, but it helps me when I’m really stressed. A show I just binged watched this summer was the U.S. version of Shameless. It’s a great show!

I used to be an avid reader but once I started going back to school and my kids were old enough to talk I have not found a quiet moment to open a book. I have also spent a great deal of the summer writing scripts and have even filmed a couple of them.

If you ever see me on campus don’t hesitate to say hi!

  1. Writing for The Signpost sounds exciting! I wish I had enough self confidence with my writing to try to write for The Signpost. Your life seems to be very busy, which is a good thing in my opinion. Good luck this year and congratulations on your future, and hopefully soon, graduation!
