Punctuation Post: Carly Rowe

When going through this assignment, the power points, and the quiz, I was feeling confident. Once I got to the quiz, I was glad I was able to use the book. It is always amazing to realize the sentences that you've written may have been incorrectly punctuated. I can't lie, I have always been a "comma user," meaning, I use commas a lot in sentences. After this section of the course, I have realized that maybe I shouldn't use them for every sentence, especially if they are not necessary. While I feel like I don’t really struggle much in the area of writing and grammar, there is always room for improvement, such as in the area of commas, semi colons, colons, and hyphens. For colons and semi colons, I am kind of awkward and sometimes don’t know where to put them and when I do use them, they are misplaced more than half of the time. With hyphens, I often get confused on if I am supposed to use them with certain things like 4-month-old or brother-in-law. I am excited to be taking this course to help with the editing skills that will be needed for my future career. It is always satisfying to know that you have the right skills and tools to write a well-written sentence. One thing that I have found funny was when people don’t use commas in the sense that they are supposed to. Much like this example I have posted, I have found many others on Pinterest that were funny, and got to the point of using commas in the correct way.

  1. I enjoyed reading your post. It certainly does make a difference where we put commas. I can relate to you in the way of using commas. I was told in high school to use a comma whenever I was in doubt. This class is providing superior instruction.
