This week’s analysis of writing headlines has
been enlightening to say the least. I really enjoyed learning about the formal
formatting of headlines (i.e. font styles, capitalization, and column widths)
in juxtaposition to the less formal qualities which tend to hold equal
significance (i.e. reflecting what is most important to each story, showing how
each story affects the reader, staying true to the overall tone of the piece).
I have to admit I struggled slightly at first in
writing my own headlines for each story. I found it difficult following all the
rules while trying to match the tones and meanings behind work that was not my
own. I overcame this obstacle through studying the rules more specifically and
reading several headlines written by professionals. I especially paid close
attention to the formatting and structure of the example headlines I collected
for the “finding headlines” assignment. I found looking for specific qualities
in each headline allowed me to break down each one and understand it’s
significance. For example I learned a lot about the importance watching how the
lines break in multiple line headlines.
Overall, I really enjoyed studying headlines over the last few weeks. I believe that is an important skill I will use throughout my future as a writer frequently.
