Week 11 - Headlines

This week I learned about the importance of the headline. I have never really thought too much about headlines because I was always focusing on the lead. Before even starting an article though, most readers will read the title first. I know we have all heard the phrase, "You can't judge a book by it's cover." Let's be honest though, that's not true at all. Most everyone judges books by their cover and titles. Similarly, we do the same to news or magazine articles. We look at the headline and the picture associated before deciding if we are going to read or not.
While doing the Finding Headlines assignment, I found most of mine through yahoo! and ksl. I wanted to share a headline that I liked, and one that I didn't like.
The first is from yahoo sports, and was an article headlined, "Will Eli Manning go boom or bust vs. Bengals?"
One of the reasons I liked this headline, is because it draws you in with good verbs. Just the use of boom or bust in a headline was good to me. It peaked my interest and made me want to read the article to see what arguments they would make. That has to be the main focus of an headline. What can I say to peak the readers interest?
One of the headlines I found that I didn't like was from yahoo news. It read, "No decision yet in trial of police officer who shot driver." The reason I didn't like this headline, is it just seemed to wordy. It was a mouthful to read. It's also not intriguing. After reading the headline, I have no desire to read the article because they've already told me everything I need to know.
