Week 12 - Dana Shumway

I can’t believe we are on week 12 of class. This semester has been difficult for me, so I am excited to see it coming to an end. The last couple of weeks I’ve found that writing headlines is not an easy task. I didn’t realize how much work and thought goes into writing headlines.

This week I personally had a hard time with tip #6 which says the following:
“If it’s not a one-line headline, you must watch how the lines break.”
It was difficult for me to figure out how to reword headlines and watch line breaks. I always want to carry my thoughts over to the next line of the headline. This week I also struggled with figuring out the word count in my headlines. I found that it was to write concise headlines while also providing enough information. The last couple of weeks I have learned that writing headlines takes a lot of time and practice. I would like to think that writing eventually becomes easy for news writers and journalists. Although this week has been difficult it has also been insightful.

The grammar mistake I found this week was a status I saw on my Facebook feed. The post read as follows:

“Listening to Christmas music all day while I do laundry makes it for a good day!”

This post should say:

“I am listening to Christmas music all day while I do laundry. This makes for a good day!”

  1. I totally relate! I also found issue with watching the line breaks. However, I believe through lots of practice and patience it becomes easier and easier to understand the importance of it all together. Great post!
