I’ve enjoyed this week in
Communication Editing. This week reminded me of my Media Writing class last
fall, and I enjoyed Media Writing. This week we were asked to look for
“effective leads.” As I’ve read articles and magazines I’ve come across several
effective leads.
Listed below is an example
of a Descriptive Lead.
“By the end of Wednesday night's World Series Game 7
between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, one curse will be broken. For
the other, the misery will remain. “
(Martin, CNN World Series Game 7: Will Cubs or Indians
break their curse?)
According to this week’s
reading, descriptive leads are used in both news and feature stories. These
leads use descriptive words to describe a person, place or event. Descriptive
leads create an image for the readers. This lead effectively paints a picture
for the reader.
Another tip we learned this
week is to determine what information is the most important to share. This
particular example shares the “Who”, “What”, “Where” and “When” of the event.
It is important to remember to organize and prioritize information when writing
a lead.
I found a grammar mistake
this week while I was texting a friend. Listed below is the text I received.
“I’m so excited to
go you and me to there house its going to be way fun!”
There are several errors in
this text! This text should read as follows:
“I’m so excited
for us to go to their house. I think it will be a lot of fun.”
That is a great lead!
