#12-Headlines

I used to be on the newspaper staff and yearbook staff when I was in high school.  I remember trying to come up with catchy headlines and captions.  It was fun doing that again.  I also used to think I was good at it, but after last week’s assignment I found out I am either rusty or not as good as I had thought.  It could also be that I was writing for high school and not college.  I rather enjoyed this assignment even though I didn’t do as well as I had anticipated.  The writing is at least fun.  I think the biggest thing I learned was the count (e.g. 2-26-2).  I didn’t know what that meant.  I also realized after the assignment how hard it is to make that work in headlines.  I would have a great idea and would keep writing it and writing it trying to get it to fit.  Then, sometimes I would just have to nix it and start all over because it wouldn’t work.  Then you get stuck with that idea and can’t seem to change your frame of mind and come up with something different.  This assignment pushed me to think of new ways to say things.

In my notes this week, I noticed that we use words that mean something to us but isn’t really the correct usage of the word.  For example, we use “sitch” all the time.  In our notes “sitch” means “situation.”  So whenever someone writes “sitch” they are stating that a person explained their situation to us.

  1. I feel you! I have never had the experience like you had, however I realized I am awful at writing headlines. I don't have the creative mind to do it. There are also so many rules that it makes it hard to apply.
