Hi everyone. Here is the headline and lead I picked this week from KSL’s website.
“(West Valley officer struck and killed during pursuit; 3 in custody) A 25-year-old officer was struck by a vehicle and killed during a brief pursuit early Sunday morning and three individuals are in custody in relation to the case, police said.” - KSL News
Although this story is really sad and disturbing, the way the lead is written works really well. First, we know the age of the police officer. In the headline, we are told that the officer is a West Valley officer, so we know there the incident occurred, and we also know that 3 people are in custody - an important detail that readers will want to know as soon as possible. In the lead, we learn the age of the officer, that the pursuit was brief, and that it occurred on Sunday morning. With the headline and the lead of thirty words, the who, what, and where questions are answered. If the why is known, we’ll learn about it later in the article. This lead is a good summary of the incident and answers the important questions right away.
I agree! The lead is written really well. The story naturally captivates people, however, the lead captures attention and pulls readers in.
