"The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions."
This is the lead
from a Rolling Stones article covering the World Series. Rolling Stones says
that it is probably the strangest sentence you will see. After 108 years of
having won the World Series the Chicago Cubs became champions.
This
lead is short and sweet. I would categorize this as a summary lead. Summary
leads are usually used in breaking news stories. The Cubs winning the World
Series is definitely breaking news.
When writing a lead you want to be sure to get your readers attention. That is the first thing your
audience will see and determine if they will want to go on and continue reading
the rest of the article. In most leads you will answer the 5 W's: who, what,
where, when, why and occasionally how also. Your article should be written like
an inverted pyramid meaning the first information given is the most important
details of the story and the story will go on in decreasing importance.
Really nice framing of the picture with the text. And I agree with leads needing to be short and sweet. The attention spans of people nowadays is shockingly small.
