Week 13/14: Simplicity

As I have been searching all types of different web pages and designs, I have realized that every single website that captured my attention possessed simplicity. We hear the phrase, "Simplicity is key" for a lot of different things in life, and web page design is no different.

Simplicity can involve a lot of different aspects. Here are three that I feel make a web page simple and successful:

Simple color scheme: When a web page has a simple design and color scheme, a positive emotion is usually emitted to the viewer. Too many colors can deter from the real message.

Alignment:When a web page has an organized layout, it creates a clean and crisp look to the eye. Too much information and a lack of organization creates a mess that viewers will immediately turn away from.

Space: Allowing "white space"allows the eye to simply focus on what is most important. Do not be afraid of space. It creates a balance to the site and presents a clear purpose and function of the web page itself.

These are just a few of the elements that go into a simplistic web page.

The above screen shots include web pages I came across this week that provide a simplistic home page for viewers. They all have simple colors, space, perfect alignment, and clearly state their purpose. Each provides a message of what they as a company are set out to do. For example, a spa saying "escape the chaos." Visitors to this page know exactly what Sego Lily has to offer, a tranquil experience. Apple's site says "the art of giving," reminding visitors that their products are great holiday gifts. No other words are needed, simply images of their products portray the message they want to portray. In web page design, simplicity is always key.

  1. Apple is always the patron saint of effective simplicity! I referenced them in my blog as well.
